Lusayo Academy

A planned private secondary school to be based at Msundwe in Lilongwe District, Malawi.

Planned secondary-school institution

Building a strong secondary-school opportunity at Msundwe

Lusayo Academy is being developed as a private, co-educational secondary school under the Secondary Schools sub-sector of Lusayo Education and Development, a division of Lusayo Mwanganya Holdings Limited. The Academy is planned to be based at Msundwe in Lilongwe District, Malawi, serving learners from Msundwe, Mpingu, communities along the Mchinji Road corridor and the wider Lilongwe area.

Organisational position: Lusayo Mwanganya Holdings Limited → Lusayo Education and Development → Secondary Schools → Lusayo Academy.

Location and campus development

The planned long-term campus is at Msundwe, within Traditional Authority M’bwatalika in Lilongwe District. Approximately two acres have been identified for the school project. The site is intended to develop progressively into a safe, organised and learner-centred secondary-school campus with teaching, administration, science, ICT, sanitation, recreation and future boarding facilities.

Educational purpose

Lusayo Academy is intended to provide affordable, high-quality and values-based secondary education. The educational model combines academic preparation with character, Christian values, leadership, digital capability, practical skills, agriculture, entrepreneurship, innovation, STEM learning, sports and community responsibility. The aim is to prepare learners not only for examinations, but also for responsible adulthood, further education, employment, enterprise and service to society.

Planned secondary-school programme

Forms 1–4 secondary education
Preparation for national secondary examinations, including MSCE
Science, mathematics and STEM development
ICT and digital literacy
Agriculture and practical learning
Entrepreneurship and financial awareness
Leadership and character development
Sports, clubs and co-curricular activities
Guidance, learner welfare and mentoring
Community service and responsible citizenship

Initial operating model and learner growth

The Academy has been planned to begin as a day secondary school, initially offering Forms 1–4. Earlier project planning has used an opening capacity of approximately 240 learners, with growth toward approximately 600 learners by Year Five as facilities, staffing and enrolment expand. Longer-term campus planning has considered a mature population in the range of approximately 600–800 learners, subject to infrastructure, demand, approvals and responsible growth.

Campus and facilities

The campus concept has been developed around phased construction rather than attempting to build the entire school at once. Facilities discussed and planned for the project include:

Classroom blocks
Administration offices
Science laboratory facilities
Library and ICT / computer studies facilities
Staff room and teacher-support spaces
Safe toilets and sanitation facilities
Borehole and reliable water system
Perimeter fencing, access roads and gatehouse / security
Sports field and recreation areas
Future hostels / boarding facilities
Dining facilities and multipurpose spaces
Future staff housing, health/clinic support and renewable-energy facilities

Early classroom-block concept

One of the school-block concepts developed for the Msundwe project consists of two 8 m × 8 m classrooms with a central 5 m × 8 m administration room. The block is approximately 8 m × 21 m, or approximately 10 m × 21 m including the veranda. This concept forms part of the broader phased infrastructure planning and remains subject to final architectural, engineering and regulatory approval before construction.

Phased development approach

Phase One planning has focused on essential teaching and operational infrastructure: classrooms, administration, science and ICT/library capability, sanitation, water supply, fencing, access and security. Later phases are intended to add more classrooms and laboratories, expanded library and ICT facilities, sports infrastructure, boarding/hostel accommodation, dining facilities, staff housing and multipurpose learning and community spaces.

Teaching, staffing and school leadership

The Academy is intended to operate with clear educational and administrative accountability. The management structure previously developed for the project includes governance oversight, a School Director, Headteacher, Deputy Headteacher, Bursar/finance function, heads of department, qualified teachers and appropriate support staff. Recruitment and staffing will be aligned with enrolment growth, curriculum requirements and Malawi education standards.

Academic quality and learner development

Academic performance will be supported through structured teaching, assessment, examination preparation, departmental monitoring, teacher development and targeted learner support. The Academy’s approach also places importance on discipline, integrity, confidence, leadership, emotional and spiritual development, communication skills and practical problem-solving.

Technology, agriculture and entrepreneurship

The school is planned as more than a conventional classroom institution. ICT and digital learning are intended to help learners develop computer literacy and confidence with modern technology. Agriculture and entrepreneurship are intended to provide practical exposure to food production, enterprise thinking, innovation and self-reliance—areas that are especially relevant to Malawi’s social and economic context.

Community and partnership orientation

Lusayo Academy is being designed to serve families and communities while building constructive relationships with parents, education authorities, teachers, churches, development organisations, businesses and other partners. Partnership opportunities may include infrastructure, laboratory and ICT development, scholarships, learning resources, teacher development, sports, water and sanitation, renewable energy and other educational-support initiatives.

Governance, registration and compliance

The school project will proceed in accordance with applicable Malawi education, company, taxation, building, health, safety and environmental requirements. Necessary registrations, approvals, inspections and documentation are treated as pre-opening and ongoing operating requirements. Website information describes the planned institution and development direction; programmes and facilities will be introduced progressively as required approvals, resources and infrastructure are secured.

Long-term vision

The long-term vision is for Lusayo Academy to become a respected secondary-school institution in the Msundwe area: academically strong, accessible, values-driven, technologically aware and practically relevant. As the campus develops, the school is intended to combine classrooms, science and ICT facilities, sports, boarding, agriculture, leadership development and community engagement in a coherent learning environment.
